Most Expensive Toilets in the World

Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Art, Luxury, World on March 16th, 2008

If someone were to say, “I just bought a Toto,” you might think they’d purchased a little black Terrier and named it after the Wizard of Oz costar. They could, on the other hand, be the proud owner of one of the world’s most expensive toilets.

Toto Neorest 600 - $5,000

World’s most expensive toilet

What more do you need, when doing your business, than your standard lavatory offers? Toto’s most expensive toilet, the Neorest 600, has a wide range of features to answer that question. For starters, the lid automatically opens whenever you approach the toilet. As soon as you rise from your state of the art porcelain throne, it automatically engages its Power Catalytic Air Purifier function. Six seconds after you’re out of range of the toilet’s sensor zone, it will automatically flush and close both the lid and the seat.

For those functions that aren’t automatic, there’s a wireless remote control. A button-press can open, close or warm the seat, change the water temperature, perform a powerful “Cyclone flush” instead of the automatic light flush or control the Washlet functions you’ll use to tidy yourself up after using the expensive toilet.

Hang Fung Gold Toilet – around $5 million

World’s most expensive toilet

This 24k gold toilet is a feature of Hang Fung jeweler’s solid gold bathroom in Hong Kong. The company had the toilet made when gold was merely $200 per ounce and planned to melt it down if gold ever reached $1,000 per ounce. When the price of gold neared the $1,000 mark in early 2008, however, the company stated that they would not have it melted down. One ton of the golden bathroom accessories surrounding the toilet would be melted down instead.

Moon River Art Park Toilet - $600 million

A toilet hidden in a cave in Shanghai’s Moon River Art Park cost 5 million yuan to build. The cave is manmade and decked out like a grotto. While entry to the park costs 30 yuan, using the toilet is free. It may be difficult to get in, though. Toilet cleaners reported people waiting in line up to two hours when the toilet was first opened in 2005.

International Space Station Toilet - $19 million

Most expensive toilet ever built

What may just be the most expensive toilet ever built isn’t the world’s most expensive toilet. That’s because it’s being launched into space! The toilet system NASA had built by Russia was delivered to the international Space Station in November 2008. The system, the same as the one in place on the Russian side of the station, recycles urine into water. It will replace a toilet system that has broken twice in 2008.

Most Expensive Video Game

Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Art, Electronics, Luxury, World on March 11th, 2008

Back in 1993, when the revolutionary first person shooter, Doom, was released, a game could be made by eleven people with a budget that was probably around $200,000. Today, the production of a video game can cost upwards of tens of millions of dollars and sometimes takes over 5 years to develop. Releasing an A-list title is a massive business undertaking, employing hundreds or thousands of people. An incredible amount of risk is involved in releasing a title. Big name publishers lean towards releasing sequels and safer titles that appeal to a broader audience.

Sometimes an ambitious game developer will completely overrun its budget and development time. Sometimes this results in an epic title that breaks all the rules set before it. More often than not, it results in poor reviews, poor sales and a disappointing game.

Most expensive video game - Shenmue

Arguably one of the latter, the most expensive video game, until recently, was a Sega Dreamcast game called Shenmue. Released in 1999, the project cost over $70 million and took over 7 years to complete. It was produced and directed by Yu Suzuki for the Sega-AM2 (Sega Amusement Machine Research and Development Department 2). Shenmue boasted unparalleled freedom and interactivity and even a real time weather system. But this wasn’t enough to impress many reviewers; the most expensive video game received mixed reviews and experienced mediocre sales. Nonetheless, the expensive game inspired a massive fan base that remains active to this day.

Most expensive video game - Grand Theft Auto IV

Rockstar North, known for their mature titles, has recently ousted Shenmue from its most expensive position and replaced it with their own offering, Grand Theft Auto IV. Taking place in the fictional Liberty City, a close likeness of New York City, GTA IV also allows players an unequaled level of freedom and interactivity. The in-game radio has over 150 songs which, through a deal with Amazon, players can download in real life. The game even includes two hours of television that a player can watch while ignoring pressing responsibilities such as assassinating suspiciously familiar anti-video game lawyers.

While the exact figure isn’t yet public knowledge, Rockstar North’s president has estimated that the world’s most expensive video game cost about $100 million to make. Luckily for us, the game only costs consumers around $60.

Most Expensive Toy Robot

Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Collectibles, Luxury, World on February 21st, 2008

If you balk at dropping $40 on a Transformers toy for your kid this Christmas, then you’ll be happy to know that the world’s most expensive toy robot wasn’t made for retail. In order to bring more exposure to one of their flagship toy lines, Japanese toymakers Bandai teamed up with well-known jewelers Ginza Tanaka. The result, valued at around $250,000 USD, is Gundam Fix Platinum.

Most expensive toy robot

Representing two years of work on the part of its creators, this expensive toy is, as its name suggests, made almost entirely of platinum. Fourteen hundred grams of pure platinum were used in the 89 parts that make up this figure. Why is it only almost entirely made of platinum? A .15 carat diamond was used in the camera eye on the figure’s head.

The figure was unveiled at Baselworld 2007 in Basel, Switzerland, the world’s largest international watch and jewelry show.

Most Expensive Speeding Tickets

Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Luxury on February 20th, 2008

If you’re upset over a $200 speeding ticket, be glad you’re not a Virginia resident. While their traditional fine is only $100 over the national median for a first time offense, they’ve recently added a $1,050 surcharge for state residents. At $1,350 total, that’s the most expensive speeding ticket in the US for first offenders.

Most expensive speeding tickets
Photo © by Jeff Dean

For the rest of us, Georgia is the state to watch out for. First-time speeders in Georgia face a maximum fine of $1,000 and possibly even up to a year in jail. North Carolina is slightly more lenient; you can only be fined up to $1,000 and spend up to sixty days in jail. Illinois, Nevada and New Hampshire also carry maximum fines of $1,000, but no jail time.

Of course, these don’t include fines and/or jail time for multiple offenses, reckless endangerment or for speeding in construction zones. As always, the best way to avoid getting the most expensive speeding ticket (or any speeding ticket) is to avoid speeding.

Most Expensive PEZ Dispenser

Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Collectibles, Food, Luxury on December 24th, 2007

PEZ may be one of the most iconic candies of the modern era. Invented in 1927 by Viennese confectioner Eduard Hass III, the first PEZ flavor was peppermint. In fact, the name PEZ is derived from the German word Pfefferminze, meaning “peppermint.” The most remarkable aspect of PEZ candy, though, is the PEZ dispenser. These collectible dispensers often feature the heads of popular characters of the time sculpted in plastic, such as Mickey Mouse or Darth Vader. The most expensive PEZ dispenser, however, doesn’t feature a popular character at all. Instead, the dispenser is crowned with the sculpted head of an astronaut.

Most expensive PEZ dispenser

The 1982 World’s Fair PEZ dispenser is believed to be an extremely rare promotional item. In fact, only two are currently known to exist. One features a blue stem and an astronaut with a matching blue helmet. The other, featuring a green stem and white helmet, was at one point advertised for sale at $100,000. Most recently, it resurfaced on eBay in 2006 and sold for $32,205.

EBay may seem like an especially fitting context for the auction of the world’s most expensive PEZ dispenser, as an often-circulated rumor states that eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar in order to help his girlfriend sell PEZ dispensers. Unfortunately for PEZ fans, such rumors are false. The first item Omidyar sold on eBay was actually a broken laser pointer.

Most Expensive Christmas Cocktail

Written by: jeremy Filed Under: Food, Luxury, World on December 19th, 2007

Movida, a London nightclub catering only to the most affluent, has just launched Flawless, the most expensive Christmas cocktail in the world. At £35,000 (over $71,000 USD), Flawless is several times the price of Trader Vic’s Mai Tai, the former most expensive cocktail in the world (£750, over $1,500 USD).

The cocktail’s less exciting ingredients include Louis XIII cognac (around $1,500 per bottle), Cristal Rose champagne (around $700 per bottle), angostura bitters ($100 to $200 per bottle) and brown sugar (a few bucks for a bag). These are, after all, things you would expect to find in such an expensive cocktail. Even the 24-karat gold leaf flakes seem a somewhat perfunctory offering for such a steep price.

Most expensive Christmas cocktail

Maybe it’s the 11-carat white diamond ring resting in the bottom of the crystal glass that makes Flawless so expensive. Maybe it’s the security guards who not only watch over Flawless’ preparation but also watch over your table until the cocktail is finished, making sure that everyone knows that you just dropped tens of thousands of British pounds on the most expensive cocktail in the world.

Or maybe you’re just in a giving mood. It’s Christmas, after all.

Most Expensive Christmas Tree

World’s most expensive Christmas tree

Soo Kee Jewellery produced the expensive tree, decking it with 21,798 diamonds (913 carats total), 3,762 crystal beads and 456 lights. The tree is nearly 20 feet tall and weighs in at over 7,000 pounds. If you’re not impressed by all of those numbers, though, try this one—$1,005,000 USD. That’s how much the expensive Christmas tree is worth.
